When you need it

An airplane harness becomes useful from around 12 months, once your toddler has their own airplane seat and is big enough for the harness weight range. It stays useful until about 4 years, or until your child outgrows the harness limits and can use the regular lap belt safely.

What to look for

Make sure the harness is aviation-approved for your airline and region (the CARES harness is FAA-approved, and other countries may have different rules). Check the height and weight limits and read the manual before the trip, since installation means looping it around the seatback. Carry any approval label or documentation so you can show crew if asked. Practice installing it at home so you are not learning it during boarding.

Airplane Harness (CARES): common questions

Do I need an airplane harness?
It is not essential for every family. An approved car seat also works on many flights and gives you a seat at your destination, though it is heavier to carry. A harness is a lightweight alternative if you are not bringing a car seat, and some airlines have their own rules, so check before you fly.
When does a baby need an airplane harness?
A toddler needs a harness when flying in their own seat without a car seat, usually from around 12 months. Follow the harness weight and height limits.
