- What do I really need for a newborn?
- A car seat, a safe sleep space, diapers and wipes, a feeding setup and a few changes of clothes cover the basics. Everything else can be added as you go. Filter this page by essential to see the short list.
- How many newborn clothes should I buy?
- Fewer than you think. Babies outgrow the newborn size quickly, and gifts tend to arrive in small sizes. A handful of bodysuits and sleepers in newborn and 0-3 month sizes is a good start.
- Does a newborn need toys?
- Not many. High-contrast cards, a play gym and your face are plenty in the first months. Toys become more interesting once your baby starts reaching and grabbing.
