When you need it
An infant bathtub is useful from birth, once your pediatrician says it is fine to move from sponge baths to tub baths. Most babies use one until around 12 months, when they sit steadily and outgrow it or move to the big bathtub with a parent close by.
What to look for
Look for a newborn sling or reclined insert that keeps your baby's head above water, plus a non-slip base so the tub stays put in the sink or bathtub. A drain plug makes emptying much easier than tipping a full tub. Check that it is easy to clean and dries without trapping water in crevices. Foldable tubs save space in smaller bathrooms.
Infant Bathtub: common questions
- Do I need an infant bathtub?
- Many families find one very helpful in the early months, but it is not strictly required. A clean kitchen sink or a regular tub with a parent holding baby can work, and some parents simply shower with their baby. Never leave a baby alone in any bath, even for a moment.
- When does a baby need an infant bathtub?
- From the newborn weeks, after the umbilical stump has healed and your pediatrician gives the okay for tub baths.
