When you need it

Baby lotion can be useful from birth for dry patches, though many newborns do not need anything at first. Families often keep using it through about 60 months, especially in winter or after frequent baths.

What to look for

Choose a fragrance-free, dye-free formula with a short ingredient list, since added scents are a common source of irritation. Thicker creams and ointments work better for very dry skin, while lighter lotions spread easily. A pump bottle makes one-handed use easier. Ask your pediatrician before using any product on rashes or eczema.

Baby Lotion: common questions

Do I need a baby lotion?
Not always. Many babies have healthy skin without any lotion, and peeling in the newborn weeks is common. Your pediatrician can tell you if a moisturizer makes sense for your baby.
When does a baby need a baby lotion?
When you notice dry patches, often after baths or in dry weather. Ask your pediatrician if anything looks irritated.
