Outdoor Play Essentials for Toddlers

Sand, water and bubbles for backyard and patio play

10 items0 essential0-5 years

Outdoor and sand covers backyard and patio play from the sitting-up stage through the preschool years. Most of it becomes useful once a child is steady on their feet, roughly from the first birthday on, when digging, pouring and climbing become favorite activities. A bubble machine and an outdoor baby swing can come out a bit earlier.

You don't need a full backyard playground. A water table or a small sandbox with a bucket and spade can fill an afternoon, and sidewalk chalk and a bubble gun take up almost no space. Bigger items like a covered wooden sandbox, a toddler slide or a basketball hoop make sense if you have the yard and the climbing energy to match. Balconies and small patios work well with a water table and chalk.

Questions parents ask

What age is a water table for?
Many toddlers enjoy a water table from around 12 months, once they can stand and play at it. It usually stays fun through the preschool years. Always supervise water play, even in shallow water.
Does a sandbox need a cover?
A cover keeps sand clean and dry and keeps animals out, so it's worth having whichever sandbox you choose. Plastic turtle-style sandboxes usually come with a lid, and wooden ones often have a built-in cover that folds into benches.
When can a baby use an outdoor swing?
Most baby swings are designed for children who sit up with good head control, often around 6 months or later. Check the swing's age and weight limits, use the harness, and stay close while they swing.
What outdoor toys work in a small space?
Sidewalk chalk, bubbles, a bucket and spade, and a compact water table all fit on a patio or balcony. Slides, hoops and bigger sandboxes make more sense when you have yard space.
