When you need it
A bucket swing becomes suitable once babies have solid head and neck control and can sit with support, usually from around 6 months. Gentle swinging is often a favorite through the toddler years. Around 36 months, many kids are ready to move to a regular belt seat swing with supervision.
What to look for
Look for a full bucket seat with a high back, leg holes and a harness that keeps a baby secure. Ropes, chains and hooks should be rated for outdoor use and the seat's weight limit. Hang it from a sturdy frame or strong tree branch, with plenty of clearance around it. Inspect ropes and hardware regularly for wear, follow the manufacturer's age guidance and always stay close.
