When you need it
Sidewalk chalk becomes fun from around 24 months, when toddlers can grip a chunky stick and love seeing their marks on the ground. At first it's scribbles and dots; preschoolers draw roads, hopscotch grids and family portraits. Chalk stays a cheap outdoor favorite until around 60 months and well beyond.
What to look for
Choose chunky, non-toxic chalk that's thick enough not to snap in small fists. Washable chalk that rinses off with water saves arguments with neighbors and landlords. Bright colors show up better on gray pavement. A bucket with a lid keeps chalk dry, and chalk holders can reduce dust on hands and clothes.
Sidewalk Chalk: common questions
- Do I need a sidewalk chalk?
- You don't need it, but it's one of the cheapest outdoor activities around. If you have a patio, driveway or quiet sidewalk, chalk can keep kids busy for a long time with no screens involved. A small box is plenty; it wears down, so buy more when needed.
- When does a baby need a sidewalk chalk?
- Usually from around 2 years, when toddlers can hold chalk and make marks.
