When you need it
A bubble gun works best from around 24 months, when toddlers have the hand strength to squeeze a trigger and want to make bubbles themselves instead of just chasing yours. That small bit of independence is a big part of the fun. Preschoolers keep using them at parties, picnics and in the yard until around 60 months.
What to look for
Choose a gun with a light, easy-to-pull trigger sized for small hands, plus a reservoir that screws on tightly so it doesn't leak down little arms. If it runs on batteries, the battery compartment should close with a screw. A non-toxic bubble solution matters because some will end up near mouths. Models with a wide base can be set down without tipping and spilling.
Bubble Gun: common questions
- Do I need a bubble gun?
- Not at all. A classic wand and bottle cost less and teach kids to blow gently, which is its own skill. If your toddler gets frustrated waiting for you to blow bubbles, though, a bubble gun gives them something they can work on their own.
- When does a baby need a bubble gun?
- Most kids can use one around 2 years, once they can press a trigger by themselves.
