When you need it

A wooden sandbox suits families with toddlers from around 18 months, when they can climb in and out by themselves and enjoy longer stretches of digging. It's a bigger, longer-lasting setup than a plastic shell, and most kids use it until around 60 months or longer.

What to look for

Look for naturally rot-resistant or properly treated wood that's safe for children's play, with smooth, sanded edges and no protruding screws. A lid that folds into bench seats is handy, and a breathable liner under the sand helps drainage while keeping weeds out. Check the dimensions against your yard and how much play sand it will need. Plan to sand and reseal the wood occasionally.

Covered Wooden Sandbox: common questions

Do I need a covered wooden sandbox?
This is a splurge, not a must. A plastic sandbox or regular playground visits work fine for most families. If you have the space and want something that looks good in the garden and lasts for years, a wooden one can be worth it.
When does a baby need a covered wooden sandbox?
Typically from around 18 months, when toddlers can climb in and out, up to roughly 5 years.
