When you need it
You need a mattress the moment the crib goes into use, whether that's from birth or after the bassinet stage around 4 to 6 months. It stays in service as long as the crib does, and many convertible cribs keep the same mattress in toddler-bed mode until around age 4.
What to look for
Firmness comes first: the surface should feel hard, spring back right away and not sag under your hand. It has to fit the crib snugly; if you can slip more than two fingers between the mattress and the frame, it's too small. A waterproof or wipeable cover makes life easier, and some mattresses have a firmer infant side and a slightly softer toddler side. Check that it meets your country's safety standard, and skip soft toppers or pads, which aren't safe for babies.
Crib Mattress: common questions
- Do I need a crib mattress?
- Yes, if you're using a crib you need a mattress made for it, since adult mattresses and folded foam aren't designed for infant sleep. A new one is the simplest choice; if you accept a hand-me-down, make sure it's clean, firm and in good shape. Extras like breathable cores or organic fabrics are nice-to-haves, not requirements.
- When does a baby need a crib mattress?
- A baby needs a crib mattress as soon as they start sleeping in the crib, whether that's from day one or after the bassinet.
