When you need it

A mattress protector is helpful from day one, when diaper leaks and spit-up are part of nightly life. It becomes even more valuable during potty training and the toddler-bed years, and plenty of families keep one on until around age 5 for the occasional nighttime accident.

What to look for

Choose a thin, fitted protector made for your exact mattress size, so it lies flat and tight with no bunching or loose flaps. It should be quiet and breathable rather than crinkly plastic, and fully machine washable and dryer safe. Avoid thick padded versions that make a firm crib mattress softer on top. Some parents layer protector, sheet, protector, sheet, so a middle-of-the-night change takes seconds instead of a full remake.

Waterproof Mattress Protector: common questions

Do I need a waterproof mattress protector?
It's strongly recommended rather than strictly essential. A mattress with a waterproof cover already handles some leaks, but a removable protector is far easier to wash and helps the mattress stay clean for a younger sibling. Having two means one is always ready while the other dries.
When does a baby need a waterproof mattress protector?
Babies benefit from a protector from birth, and it stays useful right through potty training and the first dry nights.
