When you need it
A travel system earns its keep from day one, since the infant car seat clicks straight onto the stroller frame and a sleeping newborn can move from car to sidewalk without waking. Most families use the infant seat part until somewhere around 9 to 12 months, while the stroller itself often keeps working as a regular toddler stroller up to about 3 years.
What to look for
Check that the car seat and stroller connect without fiddly loose adapters, and practice the click-in a few times before the baby arrives. Fold size matters more than people expect, so measure your trunk and make sure the folded frame fits with room left for groceries. Look for a five-point harness, a generous canopy, a roomy basket and wheels that suit your usual terrain. The car seat part should meet your country's safety standard and be installed exactly as the manual describes.
Stroller Travel System: common questions
- Do I need a stroller travel system?
- You do not strictly need one, but many parents find it the easiest way through the newborn months, especially if you drive a lot. If you mostly walk or use public transport, a carrier plus a stroller with a bassinet may suit you better. Some standalone strollers also accept car seat adapters, which gets you a similar setup.
- When does a baby need a stroller travel system?
- Most babies use a travel system from the very first ride home. It is most useful during the infant car seat stage, roughly the first year.
