When you need it

Sleep sacks take over once swaddling ends, usually around 3 or 4 months, or as soon as baby shows signs of rolling. They stay useful well into toddlerhood, with bigger sizes and leg-hole versions working up to around age 3, when many kids move to a regular blanket in a big-kid bed.

What to look for

Pick a sack sized for your child's current weight and height, with a fitted neck and armholes so it can't ride up over the face. Warmth is usually listed as a TOG rating, so choose a lighter or heavier fabric based on your room temperature rather than piling on layers underneath. A two-way zipper makes nighttime diaper changes easier. Arms should be free, and skip anything with a hood or weighted panels.

Sleep Sacks: common questions

Do I need a sleep sacks?
They aren't strictly required, but they're one of the simplest ways to keep a baby warm without a loose blanket in the crib, which is why many parents treat them as a near-essential. In a warm home, footed pajamas in the right layers can work instead. Two or three in the current size usually covers wash days.
