When you need it
A nursing cover is useful from birth for parents who want a bit of privacy while feeding in public, at family gatherings or in a shared office. It can stay useful through about 12 months, though many curious older babies start pulling covers off to look around.
What to look for
Choose lightweight, breathable fabric like cotton or muslin so your baby does not get too warm underneath, especially in summer. A slightly rigid neckline lets you peek down at your baby and keeps airflow open. Some designs double as a scarf, shopping cart cover or car seat canopy, which makes them more worth the bag space. Make sure it is machine washable and folds small.
Nursing Cover: common questions
- Do I need a nursing cover?
- No, it is completely optional. Many parents nurse comfortably without one, and a muslin blanket, a light scarf or a loose layered top can provide the same privacy.
- When does a baby need a nursing cover?
- Whenever you want privacy while nursing away from home, starting from birth.
