When you need it

A contoured changing pad is useful from the first days home, giving you a steady, comfortable spot for the many diaper changes of the newborn months. Most families use it until around 2 years, when toddlers get too long or wiggly and changes move to the floor or bathroom.

What to look for

Look for raised sides, a safety strap and a non-slip bottom, plus a way to attach the pad to your dresser or changing table. A wipe-clean surface or a washable cover saves a lot of laundry. Check the pad size against your furniture so it sits flat with no overhang. Keep one hand on your baby at all times, since straps and raised sides do not replace supervision.

Contoured Changing Pad: common questions

Do I need a contoured changing pad?
It is nice to have but not essential. Some parents change diapers on a bed, the floor or a portable changing mat. If you change on a dresser, a contoured pad with secure attachment is a helpful, more comfortable option.
When does a baby need a contoured changing pad?
A changing pad is useful from the first days home. It stays useful until your child outgrows lying still for changes, usually around 2 years.
