When you need it
A sterilizer is most useful from birth, while babies are very young and feeding gear gets heavy use. Many families use it less after the first months and stop around 12 months, relying on hot soapy water or the dishwasher instead.
What to look for
Check capacity to fit several bottles plus pump parts at once. Electric steam sterilizers are fast, microwave versions are compact, and some models include a drying function. Look for an easy-to-clean base and auto shut-off. Make sure your bottle and pump parts are labeled as safe for steam sterilizing.
Bottle Sterilizer: common questions
- Do I need a bottle sterilizer?
- Not necessarily. Boiling bottles in a pot or using a dishwasher with a sanitize cycle can work, and your pediatrician can tell you how often sanitizing is needed. Sterilizers mainly save time.
- When does a baby need a bottle sterilizer?
- From birth, when you start using bottles and pump parts. Many families sanitize most often in the first few months.
