When you need it
Baby dish detergent is useful from birth, when you start washing bottles, nipples and pump parts several times a day. Many families keep using it through about 36 months for straw cups, snack containers and toddler dishes, then switch back to their regular soap.
What to look for
Look for fragrance-free and dye-free formulas that rinse away cleanly, since some babies refuse bottles that smell or taste of soap. It should cut through milk fat and formula film without heavy scrubbing. A concentrated liquid lasts longer, and a pump bottle makes one-handed use easier while holding a baby. Check that it is safe for silicone and plastic parts, and rinse well no matter which soap you choose.
Baby Dish Detergent: common questions
- Do I need a baby dish detergent?
- Not necessarily. A mild, fragrance-free regular dish soap usually works just as well. Some parents prefer a baby-specific soap because it is made for milk residue and rinses without leaving a scent.
- When does a baby need a baby dish detergent?
- From birth, whenever you wash bottles, pump parts or other feeding gear by hand.
