When you need it

Small open cups and 360 cups can be introduced from around 6 months, alongside solids, with a few sips of water at meals. Children typically keep practicing with them until about 36 months, by which point most can manage a regular small cup.

What to look for

For open cups, choose a tiny size (around 2 to 4 oz) with a weighted base so it is easier to control. 360 cups should have a valve that releases liquid when your child sips anywhere around the rim. Check that the valve comes apart for cleaning and that all pieces are dishwasher-safe. Two small handles help babies grip during early practice.
