When you need it
A bassinet is useful from the very first night home, when a newborn sleeps in short stretches and you want them close for feeds. Most babies move on somewhere around 4 to 5 months, or sooner once they start rolling, pushing up on hands and knees, or reach the weight limit on the label. At that point it's time for a full-size crib.
What to look for
Look for a firm, flat mattress that fits the frame snugly with no gaps at the edges, plus a fitted sheet made for that exact size. Breathable mesh sides make it easier to see baby and keep air moving. Check that it meets your country's current safety standard and note the weight and developmental limits, since those decide when you stop using it. Skip add-ons like bumpers, pillows or inclined inserts; the sleep space should stay bare.
Bassinet: common questions
- Do I need a bassinet?
- You don't strictly need one, because a crib or a play yard with a bassinet attachment is also a safe place for a newborn to sleep. Many parents still find a bassinet worth it because it fits right beside the bed and makes night feeds easier. If space or budget is tight, a safe crib from day one works fine.
- When does a baby need a bassinet?
- Most families use a bassinet from birth until around 4 to 5 months, or until baby shows signs of rolling or reaches the weight limit.
