When you need it
Wool dryer balls are useful from the first loads of baby laundry, as a reusable alternative to dryer sheets. They stay useful for years, up to around 5 years and beyond.
What to look for
Look for 100 percent wool balls that are tightly felted and do not shed fibers onto dark clothes. Use several at once, since a small handful tumbles better than one or two, especially in bigger loads. Skip added fragrance oils if you prefer unscented baby laundry. Replace them when they start to unravel or get noticeably smaller, and keep them away from toddlers who might chew on them.
