When you need it
A baby toothbrush becomes useful from around 4 months, when some parents start gently brushing gums so the routine feels familiar before the first teeth arrive. It stays useful until about 36 months, when many children move to a regular toddler toothbrush with a slightly bigger head.
What to look for
Choose a brush with very soft bristles and a small head that fits comfortably in a tiny mouth, or a silicone finger brush for the gum stage. A wide, non-slip handle helps toddlers practice brushing on their own while you finish the job. Look for designs that rinse clean and dry upright, without crevices where water sits. Replace the brush every few months or sooner when bristles fray.
Baby Toothbrush: common questions
- Do I need a baby toothbrush?
- Yes, once teeth appear, a soft toothbrush becomes part of daily care. Before then, a damp washcloth wrapped around your finger does the job, so there is no rush to buy one early.
- When does a baby need a baby toothbrush?
- When the first tooth appears, often around 6 months. Your pediatrician or dentist can guide you on brushing.
