When you need it

Soft home shoes become useful from around 9 months, when babies start pulling up and cruising. They remain useful until about 4 years for indoor play, daycare and colder floors.

What to look for

Look for flexible soles that bend easily, a wide toe box and closures that keep shoes on without squeezing. Breathable material such as leather or cotton helps keep feet comfortable. Measure feet often, since they grow quickly. Ask your pediatrician if you have questions about walking or foot development.
