When you need it

Arm bands are usually designed for toddlers from around 18 months, when kids start wanting to splash and paddle on their own. They can help some children feel more confident in the water. Most kids stop using them once they start swim lessons or get more confident, often around 60 months.

What to look for

Look for arm bands that fit snugly without pinching and follow the manufacturer's size and weight guidance. Double air chambers or foam inserts add backup if one side leaks. Check that the valves are secure and the material is durable. Remember they are not life-saving devices: always keep constant adult supervision within arm's reach in and around water.
