When you need it

Door knob covers become useful from around 9 months, as babies start pulling up and reaching for handles. They matter most once your toddler figures out how to turn a knob, and they stay helpful until around age 4, when most kids can work them out or understand which rooms are off-limits.

What to look for

Look for covers that fit your knob size and spin freely, so little hands can't get a grip while adults can still squeeze and turn. Test that every adult and older sibling can open them easily, or they'll get taken off. They only work on round knobs; lever handles need a lever lock instead. Use them on doors to bathrooms, garages, laundry rooms and exterior doors.
