When you need it
Furniture anchors should go in before baby starts pulling up, which usually happens from around 6 months, and ideally before the baby arrives. They stay important well past age 5, since young kids love to climb open drawers and pull on shelves.
What to look for
Choose anchors rated for the weight of the furniture, with metal hardware or strong straps rather than flimsy plastic. Screw them into wall studs whenever possible, or use anchors suited to your wall type. Secure dressers, bookshelves, TVs and anything tall or top-heavy, including furniture in other rooms your child can reach. Check the straps every so often and re-tighten if they've loosened.
