When you need it
A seated infant float can be used once baby has good head and neck control, usually from around 3 months, and only in calm, shallow water with you right beside them. Most babies outgrow the seat or its weight limit by around 12 months, when they start wanting to splash and move more freely.
What to look for
Choose a float with a supportive seat, a wide base that resists tipping and a canopy for shade. Separate air chambers add a backup if one leaks, and valves should be secure and out of baby's reach. Check the weight and age limits and follow them closely. Remember that a float is a water toy, not a life-saving device, so keep baby within arm's reach and keep a hand on the float at all times.
Newborn Pool Float: common questions
- Do I need a newborn pool float?
- No, this is a splurge. Holding your baby in the water is the simplest and closest way to enjoy a swim together. If you'd like a shaded seat for short floats in the pool, a float can be nice, but it never replaces constant adult supervision within arm's reach.
- When does a baby need a newborn pool float?
- From around 3 months, once head control is good, and only with an adult in the water within arm's reach.
