When you need it

Knob puzzles are a good first puzzle from around 12 months, when toddlers start lifting pieces out and trying to put them back. Matching the right piece to the right hole takes practice, and by around 36 months most children move on to simple jigsaws with interlocking pieces.

What to look for

Choose solid wooden boards with chunky pieces and large knobs that are easy to pinch. Knobs should be glued firmly, since toddlers will pull hard. Simple pictures like animals, shapes or vehicles work best, with a matching image underneath each piece. Check for smooth edges and a non-toxic finish, and wipe clean with a damp cloth.
