When you need it

Toddler instruments become fun from around 9 months, when babies can bang, shake and tap with purpose. Through the toddler years they turn into a way to explore rhythm, sing along and join in, and many kids still love them at around 48 months.

What to look for

Look for instruments sized for small hands, with no small parts and smooth edges. Shakers should be sealed tightly, drums sturdy and xylophones with rounded mallets. Wood and BPA-free plastic both work; check for non-toxic finishes. A storage bag or box keeps everything together.
