When you need it
Crayons become useful from around 15 months, when toddlers can grip something in their fist and enjoy discovering that it leaves a mark. Scribbles slowly turn into circles, lines and faces, and crayons stay a staple through the preschool years until around 60 months and beyond.
What to look for
For young toddlers, choose chunky, egg-shaped or triangular crayons that fit a fist grip and don't snap easily. Washable formulas make walls, tables and clothes much easier to clean. Look for non-toxic crayons labeled as meeting art-material safety standards, since some will be tasted. A small zip pouch keeps a travel set together for restaurants and daycare.
Crayons: common questions
- Do I need a crayons?
- Yes, a box of crayons is one of the cheapest and most useful things on this list. They need nothing but paper, travel well and keep toddlers busy at the table, on a plane or in the car. You probably won't need a big set; a handful of bright colors is plenty to start.
- When does a baby need a crayons?
- Most toddlers are ready to scribble around 15 months, with supervision at first.
