When you need it
A paper roll becomes useful from around 18 months, once scribbling turns into big, sweeping drawings that won't fit on a normal sheet. Taped to the floor or a table, it lets toddlers draw with their whole arm. Preschoolers use it for painting, tracing each other and making long pictures until around 60 months.
What to look for
An IKEA MÅLA style roll with a simple holder is popular because it sits on a table or mounts on an easel. Check that the paper is thick enough for paint and markers without tearing, and that the roll width suits your table. If the dispenser has a cutting edge, make sure it's covered or out of reach. Recycled or unbleached paper is a nice option.
Paper Roll: common questions
- Do I need a paper roll?
- No, a roll is just convenient. Opened-up cardboard boxes, the back of old wrapping paper or printer paper taped together work fine. If your toddler loves drawing and you like a quick setup, a roll on the table saves you constantly fetching fresh sheets.
- When does a baby need a paper roll?
- Usually from around 18 months, when drawings get bigger, through the preschool years.
