When you need it
Magnetic tiles usually click from around 18 months, when toddlers can stick two pieces together and knock them apart. Over the next few years they build towers, houses, ramps and marble runs, and many kids still use them until around 60 months and beyond.
What to look for
Safety comes first: magnets must be fully sealed inside the tiles, because swallowed magnets are a serious medical emergency. Check that the plastic is thick and that edges are riveted or welded, not just glued. Look for sets that state they meet toy safety standards. Mixing shapes like squares and triangles makes building more interesting. Inspect the tiles regularly and discard any that are cracked.
Magnetic Tile Set: common questions
- Do I need a magnetic tile set?
- Not essential, but many families find them one of the most-used toys in the house. Simple wooden blocks or building bricks offer similar open-ended play. If you want something that grows with your child and encourages long stretches of screen-free building, they're worth it.
- When does a baby need a magnetic tile set?
- From around 18 months, with supervision, until about 5 years.
