When you need it

Balance stones start to make sense from around 12 months, once toddlers are walking and itching to step up onto anything. At first they simply climb on and off one stone at a time. Older kids line them up into paths, hop between them and build obstacle courses, so the set often stays in use until around 48 months.

What to look for

Look for stones with a rubberized, non-slip base so they don't skid on wood or tile floors, and a slightly textured top for bare feet. They should be firm enough to stand on without wobbling badly, yet light enough for a toddler to carry and rearrange. Check the stated weight limit, and choose a material that wipes clean. Sets that nest into each other take up far less room in a small home.

Stacking Balance Stones: common questions

Do I need a stacking balance stones?
No, these are a fun extra rather than a must. Sofa cushions on the floor or a line of painter's tape can turn into a balance game in seconds. If you have an energetic toddler and long rainy afternoons, though, a set gives them a safe way to burn energy indoors.
When does a baby need a stacking balance stones?
From around 12 months, once toddlers walk steadily, up to roughly 4 years old.
