When you need it
A ligashka, or hip seat carrier, becomes useful from around 6 months, once your baby has steady head control and can sit with support. It really shines in the toddler years up to about 3 years, when children want to walk a bit, get carried a bit and then get down again a minute later.
What to look for
Look for a wide, padded waist belt with a secure buckle and a firm seat shelf that does not sag under your child's weight. Check the weight limit and whether shoulder straps are included or can be added, since they spread the load on longer carries. A storage pocket inside the seat is handy for keys and wipes. Try it on if you can, because fit around your waist and hips makes a big difference to comfort.
Ligashka (Hip Seat Carrier): common questions
- Do I need a ligashka?
- It is not essential, but parents of toddlers who constantly ask to be picked up often call it a back saver. A regular soft carrier works for older babies too, though getting a child in and out takes longer. If you already have a comfortable carrier and rarely do quick up-and-down carries, you can skip it.
- When does a baby need a ligashka?
- Babies can usually ride in a hip seat carrier once they have solid head and trunk control, from around 6 months. It is most useful in the toddler years, until about 3 years.
