When you need it
A shape sorter becomes fun around 10 months, though at first babies mostly drop shapes in through the open top. Matching shapes to holes takes practice and usually clicks during the second year. By around 30 months most children can do it easily and move on to puzzles.
What to look for
Choose a sorter with a few simple shapes for younger babies and more for older toddlers. Chunky pieces that are easy to grip are a must, and they should be too large to be a choking risk. A lid that opens easily lets kids retrieve the shapes themselves. Wood or BPA-free plastic both work.
Shape Sorter: common questions
- Do I need a shape sorter?
- It's a classic first puzzle, but not essential. Stacking cups and simple puzzles teach similar skills. If you like simple, screen-free toys with a clear goal, it's a good addition.
- When does a baby need a shape sorter?
- From around 10 months, when babies start posting objects, until about 2 and a half years.
