When you need it

A toilet lock becomes useful from around 9 months, when babies pull up on anything and get curious about water. It stays helpful until around age 3, when potty training begins and your child needs to lift the lid on their own.

What to look for

Look for a lock that fits your toilet's lid shape and can be opened easily by adults, ideally one-handed. Strong adhesive that holds up to cleaning matters. Make sure it doesn't damage the seat. Some designs release automatically when the seat is lifted, which is handy for guests.

Toilet Lock: common questions

Do I need a toilet lock?
It depends on whether you can keep the bathroom closed. If bathroom doors stay shut with a knob cover or latch, you might not need a toilet lock. Small children can drown in very little water, so keeping toddlers away from toilets is worth some effort.
When does a baby need a toilet lock?
A baby needs a toilet lock once they can pull up and wander into the bathroom, from around 9 months.
