When you need it
Activity cubes get interesting around 9 months, once babies sit steadily and start pulling up to stand. With something to do on every side, they keep toddlers busy until around 24 months, when puzzles, building toys and pretend play usually take over.
What to look for
Choose a cube with a wide, stable base so it won't tip when baby pulls up on it. Wooden versions last a long time; look for non-toxic finishes and smooth, rounded edges. Check that bead mazes, gears and doors are firmly attached. A cube that's not too tall is easier for little ones to reach over.
Activity Cube: common questions
- Do I need an activity cube?
- Not really. It's a popular first birthday gift, but plenty of everyday items keep babies busy too. If you have the space and like screen-free toys that cover many skills in one place, it's a solid choice.
- When does a baby need an activity cube?
- From around 9 months, when babies sit and pull up, until about 2 years.
