When you need it

Textured balls get interesting around 6 months, when babies sit, squeeze and mouth everything with different surfaces. Once they crawl, a rolling ball becomes a great reason to move. By around 24 months most toddlers prefer bigger balls for kicking and throwing.

What to look for

Choose soft, BPA-free plastic or rubber with a mix of textures, colors and sizes. Every ball in the set should be too big to fit fully in a child's mouth. Check how they clean, since some have small holes where water can collect. If you're buying for twins or siblings, larger sets mean less fighting.
