When you need it
Soft blocks work from around 6 months, when babies can sit up, hold something in each hand and enjoy knocking towers down. Toddlers build taller stacks as their hands get steadier, and by around 24 months many kids move on to harder blocks or building bricks.
What to look for
Look for blocks soft enough to be safe if thrown but firm enough to stack. Silicone or rubber blocks wipe clean and can go in the bath, while fabric versions should be machine washable. Pictures, numbers or textures add interest. Avoid blocks with bells, beads or other small pieces that could come loose.
