When you need it

A dress-up box becomes fun from around 30 months, when kids start acting out roles like doctors, firefighters or animals. Pretend play grows more elaborate in the preschool years, and many kids enjoy dressing up until around 60 months and beyond.

What to look for

Look for costumes that are easy to put on and take off, with simple closures like elastic or hook-and-loop. Avoid long cords and small parts, and check for washable fabrics. A sturdy box or basket keeps everything together. Hats, scarves and props add variety without much cost.

Dress-Up Box: common questions
