When you need it
An object permanence box suits babies from about 6 months, when they begin to understand that things still exist even when they can't see them. It's most engaging between roughly 8 and 14 months, and by 18 months many kids find it too easy and move on.
What to look for
Look for solid wood with smooth edges and a non-toxic finish. The ball should be large enough to be safe for mouthing, and the tray should be deep enough that the ball reliably rolls back out. A compact footprint makes it easy to store. Some boxes include a drawer or a second ball, which adds a little variety.
Object Permanence Box: common questions
- Do I need an object permanence box?
- It's a nice extra, not a need. You can play peek-a-boo with a toy under a cloth or make a simple version with a box and a ball. If you enjoy Montessori-style toys, though, it's a well-loved one.
- When does a baby need an object permanence box?
- From around 6 months, when babies start tracking hidden objects, to about 18 months.
