When you need it
Washable paints and an easel become fun from around 24 months, when toddlers can hold a chunky brush and enjoy making big strokes of color. Painting stays a favorite through the preschool years, often until around 60 months, as pictures get more detailed and intentional.
What to look for
Choose washable, non-toxic paints that come out of clothes and wipe off surfaces easily. Chunky brushes and sponges are easier for small hands. An easel should be sturdy, adjustable in height and ideally include a paper roll and chalkboard side. A smock or old shirt and a drop cloth make cleanup less stressful.
