When you need it

Silicone utensils are useful from around 6 months, when babies begin solids and want to grab the spoon themselves. They usually stay helpful until about 18 months, when many toddlers have the coordination for small metal cutlery.

What to look for

Look for soft, food-grade silicone tips that are gentle on gums, ideally over a sturdy core so the spoon does not flop. Short, thick handles are easier for small fists to grip. A shallow spoon bowl holds just the right amount of purée. Choose sets that are dishwasher-safe and one-piece so food cannot get trapped in gaps.
